BREMERTON, Wash. – Families of the Navy’s Exceptional Family Member (EFM) Program met at Camp McKean in Bremerton, Washington, for a family picnic Aug. 20.

The picnic was hosted by Naval Base Kitsap’s Fleet and Family Support Center in partnership with Morale, Welfare and Recreation. It was held to give families with children, who have special needs, the chance to meet in a fun and safe environment, which included snacks, gifts, outdoor games and a large bounce house.

“We are here to give exceptional families the chance to meet, relax and have fun without feeling like they have to constantly explain their child to other parents who don’t understand,” said Susan Olson, EFM Program liaison Navy Region Northwest. “It’s good for parents to meet and have another support system.”

Though there were many enjoyable activities at the picnic, the children seemed to love the large pirate ship bounce house the most.

“The children loved all of it but it was almost impossible to get them out of the bounce house after we got here,” said Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Leo Potts, Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Puget Sound, from Seattle. “All the children were great with each other and we are really happy we came today.”

Events like this, and others, put together by Fleet and Family Support Center throughout the year give parents many unique opportunities to meet-up and build a large support network.

“The [Fleet and Family Support] Center gives some great support in this area and it’s just awesome,” said Rick Whitney, a registered behavioral therapist. “I really hope people are aware of all of the things going on so they can join in on the fun and not feel like they are alone out there.”
