ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. - Hot afternoon of entertainment … B-1 bomber zooms by … Thunderbirds soar in formation… sounds of freedom… people cheer.
“That was awesome.”
The statement echoed across the flightline on Ellsworth Air Force Base Aug. 15 and 16 as both military and civilian aircraft took turns performing aerobatic demonstrations in the skies above the base.
The 2015 Dakota Thunder airshow and open house attracted more than 51,000 people during the two-day event, surpassing both the 2009 and 2011 airshows.
“It’s an honor to welcome you all here at Ellsworth Air Force Base,” said Col. Gentry Boswell, 28th Bomb Wing commander. “We have aircraft and vehicles from all around the nation and from all four services here to represent not only the Air Force, but the Department of Defense as a whole.”
Guests had the privilege of watching various aerial displays, such as the Air Force Thunderbirds and dogfight routines, and a Lamborghini and Ferrari race down the flightline.
The flightline was also filled with static aircraft from military units across the nation, in addition to a few historic displays like the B-25.
Vendors offered numerous souvenirs and the Pride Hangar provided several activities for children of all ages.
“When we heard about the Thunderbirds a few months ago, that was it,” said Paul Langevin of Pine Haven, Wyoming. “I made up my mind and we were coming to this airshow. Absolutely.”
Additionally, spectators witnessed a close air support mission, demonstrating a primary capability used by the B-1 bomber in the past decade and currently in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and Operation Inherent resolve overseas.
“It was really cool to see all the airplanes and to get to see the airplane my dad used to fly,” said Ethan, son of Lt. Col. Paul, 28th BW director of staff.
