FORT HOOD, Texas – August is considered to be one of the hottest months in Texas, but even with temperatures often reaching a whopping 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more, it doesn't stop outdoor activities.

More than 30 people participated in the Hotter than Hades 5k Run/walk, on Aug. 15 at the Harvey Functional Fitness Center.

“The Hotter than Hades run happens annually for about six years now,” said Millie Land, the Morale, Welfare and Recreation specialist. “This event is to bring the military community and the local surrounding areas together.”

Before the participants started, Land and her staff opened up with a verbal description of the route, a safety brief and the playing of the national anthem.

With the sun beating down, the participants stretched in place as they prepare for the event. After they heard the starter’s pistol, some of the runners and walkers eagerly took off hoping to place well at the end of the run.

Some took the run as preparation for future marathons, while others did it for fun.

“This run is pretty interesting because it's really hot, but I just participate for the thrill,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen Miller, of the Fort Hood Mobilization Brigade. “That's where it gets the name 'Hotter than Hades.' It's a little more challenging because of the heat. As a military member that's been in the Army Reserves for 36 years, I'm always prepared.”

Miller came in 1st Place for his age group in the 50 and older category.

The run started at 8 a.m., and participants were encouraged to come earlier for registration and a T-shirt.

Staying hydrated and eating nutritious meals was a key factor before the race. Water, fruits and snacks were provided for the participants as well as a shaded area.

The 5K is an achievable distance for all ages and abilities. It can be ran, jogged or walked. One participant brought her dog to run with her.

“I encourage everyone to participate in the MWR activities,” said Land. “The registration fees go back into the MWR for other events.”

Land said that a lot of work and preparation was put into the event.

“It took about three months to coordinate the event,” said Land. “This was an opportunity to bring everyone together as one team and one fight. It was a great turn out. Hard work pays off!”

Some of the runners that finished early ran back to motivate the ones that were on their way to the finish line.

After the last participant crossed the finish line, the results were tallied, and trophies and medals were awarded in each age category.

Future races include the Sprint Triathlon coming up on Sept. 12 and Land encourages anyone feeling adventurous to participate. The event will take place at the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreational Area. For more information for upcoming MWR events, visit www.hoodMWR.com
