FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. - Soldiers of the 328th Combat Support Hospital (CSH), conducted medical training during Operation Caucasus Restore at Fort Hunter Liggett, California, July 31, 2015. The 328th CSH is part of the 139th Medical Brigade, 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support) out of Independence, Missouri.

One of the Soldiers who participated in the Warrior Exercise (WAREX) is Staff Sgt. Joe Agustin, an operating room (OR) technician with the 328th CSH, and an OR Tech in his civilian life.

For Agustin, in his civilian side as an OR Tech, he only works on one surgery at a time, while on the military side, an OR tech can work on two surgeries at once.

"On the civilian side it's way different," said Agustin.

Working on two surgeries at once requires more focus and awareness to things such as cross contamination with the instruments, said Agustin.

When performing two surgeries at once, "it's a challenge, the operating room is split in half," said Sgt. 1st Class David Cantu, an OR Tech for the 7307th Medical Training Support Battalion (MTSB), Medical Readiness and Training Command (MRTC), from Fort Sam Houston, Texas, is also an OR Tech in his civilian life. The 7307th MTSB provided training to the 328th CSH during Operation Caucasus Restore.

On the military side, the OR shows versatility by being able to process the instruments needed for surgery, Agustin added. Being able to process the instruments himself, Agustin said, makes things a little easier in the operating room for him. In the military OR, if there is a certain tool he needs, he doesn't have to go to someone else to get it.

It's not all differences between the military and civilian OR.

One key similarity between both the military and civilian OR - an OR Tech needs to be able to plan out what instruments the surgeon will need for the surgery.

"You have to be two, three steps ahead when you're in the OR," said Agustin. "It's all about preparation."

The 328th CSH and the 7307th MTSB were part of Operation Caucasus Restore, a platform that provides joint training for more than 4,000 service members from 72 different units. Branches included in the training consist of the active duty component of the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, U.S. Army National Guard and the U.S. Navy.
