    185th Aviation Brigade

SOUTHWEST ASIA – Recently the 185th Theater Aviation Brigade participated in a personnel recovery exercise in Southwest Asia with the Marines. Since arriving in Kuwait in April, the 185th TAB has participated in numerous joint aviation exercises The development and use of tactics between U.S. Army aviators and the U.S. Marine Corps personnel recovery team greatly increases the successfulness of personnel recovery missions.

Chief Warrant Officer 5 Donald Dukes Jr., 185th TAB, spent months working alongside his Marine counterpart, Capt. Ryan Bobber, to develop training missions that involved a downed aircraft. During the training scenario, the Marines conducted a personnel recovery mission. The downed pilot communicated with the Marines through radio transmissions, guiding them to the landing zone.

“This exercise gave us the chance to work with the Marines and make sure we are all speaking the same language,” Dukes said.

As the Marine aircraft landed, the personnel recovery team rushed into action, using the tactics and procedures developed during the planning process.

As the personnel recovery team reached the pilot they shouted: “Hands up. Let me see your hands.”

Once the Marine ground team was able to positively identify the pilot, they asked him if he had any injuries and, once the all clear was given, the team quickly headed back to the MV-22 Osprey.

“We had Chief Warrant Officer 4 David Corbi do exactly what he would do if he had actually gone down and needed to be recovered,” Dukes said.

With a common radio language and similar personnel recovery tactics, the Mississippi Army National Guard’s 185th Theater Aviation Brigade, will now begin to develop more in depth training exercises that will strengthen the interoperability working relationship with the U.S. Army aviators and other U.S. military forces.
