    Marine Corps Base Hawaii

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - Marines and Sailors are being encouraged to take a step out of the daily grind and into adventure with new events and services by Marine Corps Community Services Hawaii.

These expanded services at Marine Corps Base Hawaii are for patrons at places including the Outdoor Recreation Center and Base Theater. Col. Sean Killeen, commanding officer at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, specifically directed many of the new measures, said Jeff Chaney, director of MCCS Hawaii.

“He wants to help Marines get out of barracks to enjoy what Hawaii has to offer,” Chaney said.

The updates were chosen especially so service members can still enjoy Oahu’s mild yearlong weather, Chaney said. The MCCS Hawaii director said although junior Marines and Sailors may have limited resources while stationed at MCB Hawaii, Killeen is working to ensure they still have the opportunity to enjoy Hawaii. He said the CO and MCCS Hawaii are dedicated to serving service members, ensuring they and their families have a high quality of life.

Making the shot at the golf course

Golfers will have a new hi-tech way to carry their clubs efficiently with a single-engine golf board they can rent out from the Klipper Golf Course. The technology can also be used in surfboards for water enthusiasts to hang ten in calm waters. Both the golf course and the Outdoor Recreation Center are scheduled to have the engine-powered devices available for patrons by October 2015.

For night bird golfers, the course is scheduled to host the inaugural Commander’s Glow Golf Classic,
Aug. 29 at 6:45 p.m. teams of four players are scheduled to compete for prizes and up to 15 teams may enter. Both service members and civilians will be able join in, and the game will be in a six-hole shotgun format.

    Relaxing at the Base Theater

For adults seeing R-rated movies, they can now purchase adult beverages with their other concessions at the theater’s snack bar. Theater attendees may buy their beverages with a driver’s license proving they are of the legal age to drink.

    Hitting the beach

Enjoying Pyramid Rock Beach and other beaches at MCB Hawaii will be easier for those without cars with the new updates, Chaney said.

A mobile truck with food, drinks and equipment for water activities is scheduled to make periodic trips to Pyramid Rock Beach. The Outdoor Recreation Center is operating the new truck, which will offer snorkels, fins, adult beverages and other items patrons can take to relax at the beach. Chaney said the truck is scheduled to begin its first runs next month.

The CO also wants to remind service members that only beer and wine in non-glass containers are allowed and the beaches are open to MCB Hawaii personnel any time as long as there isn’t an emergency.

“The beaches are open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week,” Chaney said. “Although lifeguards are not on duty in the evenings, the beaches remain open.”

Cool off with the Outdoor Recreation Center

New measures at the center are being implemented at the center to make it easier for patrons to rent out equipment, Chaney said.

Water lovers will have three pontoon boats they can rent out with new specialized features.

“These pontoon boats have GPS, so you don’t get stranded on coral reef patches,” Chaney said. “They’ll also include racks so patrons can take a standup paddle board to paddle there.”

He said the center is also on target for ensuring all of its 24 boats will have standup paddle board racks by the end of the year.

Chaney said MCCS Hawaii is in the process of analyzing how to ensure safer boating using data collected from the
GPS units.

With all of these changes, Chaney said his office and the CO are continuously striving to make enjoying all of Hawaii’s wonders easier for MCB Hawaii. After living in Hawaii for 14 years, the MCCS Hawaii director said he’s still amazed at the beauty of the island.

“I came from Baltimore,” Chaney said. “We were lucky if we got four to five months of sunshine. Marines should get out to enjoy what Hawaii can offer in the outdoors. If you’re not out in the water, enjoy the land itself. The hikes are gorgeous or get out to enjoy Hawaii culture.”
