    SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – Today the 4th Battlefield Coordination Detachment, otherwise known as the 4th BCD, hosted a change of command ceremony today here at Patton Park.

    The outgoing commander, Col. Robert C. Agans Jr., relinquished command to Col. Samuel J. Saine, the incoming commander, in a ceremony that hosted various distinguished guests and prominent names from the Sumter community.

    Brig. Gen. David Glaser, the U.S. Army Central chief of staff, was the presiding officer for the ceremony and delivered a speech about Agans time in command.

    “Since taking command two years ago, the 4th BCD has achieved enumerable successes under Colonel Agans leadership. Supporting two conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as ARCENT’s campaign plan. In 2013 and 2014 the 4th BCD supported combat operations and set conditions for the International Security Assistance Forces and transitioned to Operation Freedom Sentinel and the resolute support mission, which is currently under way.

    "Finally I want to highlight, that under Colonel Agans leadership, the BCD coordinated over 370,000 hours of intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance support, as well as over 70 airdrops that delivered approximately 1,300 bundles of emergency supplies and humanitarian assistance to coalition forces and displaced persons,” said Glaser. “You are an exemplary leader and mentor, who has motivated those in your charge, and you are both passionate about your duties and a strong believer in mission command the empowerment of your Soldiers, which is evident in their success.”

    After Glaser’s words about the outgoing commander, he spoke of the hard work put in by the Soldiers which made all of those achievements possible, thanking the families of all involved who supported these Soldiers, and it was then time to hear from the commanders.

    “I would like to thank Lieutenant General James Terry and Command Sergeant Major Ronnie Kelley for the outstanding leadership and command climate that provided the support, guidance, flexibility, and opportunities, which allowed me to learn and grow in command and encourage initiative at all ranks and levels,” said Agans. “To my Soldiers your quiet professionalism, extraordinary dedication, selfless sacrifice, efforts, initiative, innovation and accomplishments have been truly amazing. You have supported numerous joint exercises, maintained split base operations and become true resilient exacting multifunctional professionals at integrating air-ground operations and translating green-to-blue and blue-to-green.”

    Closing the ceremony Saine gave his speech and stood in front of his unit and took command. In his remarks he stated, that he was thankful for the opportunity to lead a fine group of Soldiers. He also thanked the Sumter community and the ARCENT family for accepting him and welcoming him with open arms, he also thanked various family members he deemed critical in getting him to this point in his career.

    After his remarks he stood in front of his new formation as the new commander of the 4th BCD.
