SAN DIEGO, Calif. – On behalf of the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Single Marine Program, Col. John Farnam, commanding officer of MCAS Miramar, accepted a proclamation recognizing the 20th Anniversary of the program at the City Administration Building, San Diego, July 21.

The program was established on July 22, 1995, and has contributed volunteers to the city of San Diego ever since.
The SMP volunteers more than 300 hours a year, some of which are spent at local schools where members join and lead physical education classes.

“I really like volunteering and helping out when it comes to kids especially,” said Cpl. Michelle Sanchez, an administration clerk with MCAS Miramar and an Atlanta, native. “Because my own siblings aren’t here, I like interacting with little kids. I just like to help out too. It makes you feel good.”

Volunteering is not only good for the service members, but also for the community.

“I’m told attendance at schools, the day the Marines are there, are better than any other day of the year because the kids want to come out and spend time with the Marines,” said Farnam. “I was very proud of them.”

The SMP serves as a platform for single, active-duty service members to participate in recreational activities, special events and community involvement.

“The Single Marine Program is dedicated to improving morale, increasing self-sufficiency and integrating the single Marines into our community,” said Chris Cate, the San Diego councilmember of District 6.

Although Marines are known for being always ready for the fight, the spirit of volunteering is also a big part of the warrior ethos.
