PANAMA CITY, Fla. – USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1), operated by the Military Sealift Command, departed Panama City, Fla. on a return to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Ft Story, Va., after its completion of Fleet Experimentation (FLEX) period one.

The military mission is never complete. In the spirit of resiliency, physical fitness and competitive determination Master Chief Petty Officer John Long, senior enlisted advisor of SPS-JHSV 2015, established and competed in a four-event competition to test the physical and mental toughness of the SPS-JHSV 2015 crew members.

“In the spirit of friendly competition the events will break the monotony while underway, test their physical strength and bragging rights for the winner,” said Long. “Winners will have a chance at winning door prizes of the JHSV-1, I would like to have another competition once the Marines are on the Spearhead.”

For some events the competition was gender specific. Male competitors had to perform as many repetitions on the 135-pound bench press, pull up, best 1000-meter row and push up. Female competitors had to perform as many repetitions on the 45-pound bench press, timed dead hang, best 1000-meter row and push up.

There were six male and two female competitors to validate their physical strength and conditioning. Chief Warrant Officer Three Jeffrey Sherbrook, assessor of the SPS-JHSV 2015, won the 135-pound bench press for completing 61 repetitions. Lt. Aaron Mitchem, anti-terrorism and force protection officer of SPS-JHSV 2015, won the pull up and push up events, 18 pull ups and 46 push ups. Explosive Ordnance Disposal 1st Class Daniel Haines, explosive ordnance disposal specialist of the SPS-JHSV 2015, won the 1000-meter row in 3 minutes, 1 second. Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jessica Thurber, coxswain of the SPS-JHSV 2015, won the 45-pound bench press, push up and 1000-meter row events, she completed 42 repetitions, 32 pushups and completed the 1000-meter row in four minutes.

Constructionman Susana Reyes-Urena, construction electrician of the SPS-JHSV 2015 won the timed dead hang event with 49 seconds.

The 1000-meter row definitely tested the strength and muscular endurance of the competitors. “I just don’t know how he finished in three minutes,” said Senior Chief Information Systems Technician Michael Stoll, information systems technician of SPS-JHSV 2015, upon completion of the events.

Fleet Experimentation (FLEX) period one was conducted from June 14–22 in support of SPS-JHSV 15.

The FLEX Campaign period two is set to take place in July at Key West, Fla.

SPS-JHSV-15 is a U.S. Navy deployment focused on experimentation and subject matter expert changes with partner nation militaries and security forces.
