Story by Lt. Col. John Tongret

    Winn Army Community Hospital

FORT STEWART, Ga. - What started as a hobby during her training as an occupational therapist assistant has developed into fulfilling achievements and a true love for the sport of bowling. Staff Sgt. Tiara Jenkins recently competed in the Armed Forces Bowling Championships as a member of the All-Army bowling team in Jacksonville, Fla.

Bowling for nearly six years, Jenkins is an exceptional bowler who continues to improve her game participating in bowling leagues at Fort Stewart and Savannah, Ga. She encourages young people to try bowling as a way to keep themselves engaged in something positive; noting scholarships are available to those participating in recreational bowling, even from a young age.

Jenkins, who is from Baltimore, currently maintains a 190 pin average with a high-game of 288. She is still chasing that elusive perfect game of 300.

Being a member of the All-Army bowling team is not new for Jenkins. This is her second time selected for the elite team. In order to participate in tryouts and competition, she had to be away from her primary duties at Winn Army Community Hospital.

“The hospital leadership has been very supportive by allowing me to take time away to compete,” said Jenkins.
Bowling at her level is not as easy as the typical recreational bowler. To challenge the skills and abilities of the bowlers, different oil patterns are put on the bowling lanes during each day of the competition. The changing patterns make bowling harder than it would be for those just bowling for fun.

“I was honored to make the team two years in a row and to be able to bowl with the same women again this year,” said Jenkins. “It is such a great experience to bowl with all the other service members.”

The All-Army team is comprised of eight members, four male and four female. She says “the team thrives as a result of the camaraderie and team mate encouragement” and often they sing cadences for motivation and emphasizes team accomplishments instead of individual accomplishment.
During the Armed Forces Bowling Championships this year, the women’s team performed well competing against the Navy, Air Force, and Marines. They earned gold medals in Women’s All events, and the Women’s Team event for the second year running. Jenkins placed fourth in the Mixed Doubles event and the Women’s Singles event.

"I am looking forward to trying out again next year," said Jenkins. "I want to see if I can make it a Three-peat."
