DECATUR, Ga. – Atlanta VA Medical Center’s (VAMC) veterans danced their way to top honors at the 2015 National Creative Arts Festival.

The Beulah Boys, a seven-man line dance team sponsored by the Atlanta VAMC’s recreational therapy, won first place in the Ambulatory Dance-Line Dance Section in the dance division at this year’s competition, which kicked off Jan. 1, and raised the visibility of the creative achievements of our nation’s veterans.

The dance division, which is judged and coordinated each year by VA therapists who volunteer to serve as national chairpersons, offers veterans the opportunity to prepare dance routines for videotaping and submission into the competition. Competition rules require at least three veterans in the group to form a line.

“The Atlanta VA Medical Center is appreciative to have The Beulah Boys line dancing team bring us our second national gold medal in this competition,” Atlanta VAMC Recreational Therapist and Adaptive Sports Coordinator Chauncy Rozier said.

    Members of the Beulah Boys:

Veterans William Rogers, aka "Q-Dog" — Age 71; Hurbert Jackson, aka "Zydeco Jack" — Age 72; and Luther Walker "Smooth Luke" — Age 66 (Walker was a member of the winning submission, but is currently unable to perform); Winston "Nick" Bowers, aka "Firefighter #1" — Age 60; Jerry Heard, aka "Firefighter #2" — Age 64; Chico Hill, aka "Charmin' Chico" — Age 65; Leon Nolton, aka "DJ Bosco" — Age 62; and Sam Swain, aka "Sandman" — Age 72.

“This is a great honor and it opens doors for other veterans to know that many opportunities are available for them to participate while demonstrating healthy living,” Rozier said. “Congratulations Beulah Boys!”
