CAMP CASEY, South Korea - The Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, held a memorial service for Pvt. Michael Carrasco at the Camp Casey Chapel July 10 at Camp Casey, South Korea.

Carrasco served as a computer / detection system repairer in Juliet Forward Support Company, 1-9 Cav. He passed away on June 27 in Killeen, Texas.

During his time with 1-9 Cav., Carrasco made a significant impact on many of the Soldiers he worked with.

“Pvt. Carrasco was one of those Soldiers who I got to know very well here,” said Lt. Col. Jason Tussey, battalion commander, 1-9 Cav. “Back at Fort Hood there were many nights where I would work late and it always seemed that I would run into and talk with Pvt. Carrasco.”

“During these talks he would ask me questions about service, how to be a better Soldier,” Tussey said. “It quickly became apparent that he was a young man who understood his own life’s challenges and he was not only ready to face them, but eager to grab his future and become the very best American he could be.”

Capt. Charles Jones, company commander, Juliet FSC, also recognizes the great potential that Carrasco possessed.

“Before his untimely passing from this world, Pvt. Carrasco came to realize that there was something more, something better for him, a purpose driven life, and he was on a path to obtain that goal,” Jones said.

His awards include the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korea Defense Service medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Carrasco is survived by his mother, Bethsaida Rodriguez, his father, Manuel Carrasco, his brothers, Marcos and Manuel, and his sisters, Vanessa and Maria.
