    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines are expeditionary in nature. They deploy for months at a time and make sacrifices that most could never imagine. They support each other, fight together and suffer together. However, even with the support of their Marine Corps family, Marines couldn’t do what they do without the support of their own families.

Marines and sailors with 8th Communication Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force held a battalion five-kilometer Glow Run aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, July 1, 2015, in order to raise funds for the unit’s Marine Corps Ball, increase unit morale and enhance family readiness.

The Glow Run started with registration where participants received a t-shirt that said ‘this run glows.’ They also received glow sticks, had access to glow in the dark body paint and competed in a costume contest in which the Marine that ‘glowed’ the most received free tickets to this year’s Ball.

Lt. Col. Derek Lane, commanding officer of the battalion, said that there was an entrance fee for the run and the battalion netted more than $5,000 to go to their ball fund as well as having an event where the unit could build camaraderie, Esprit de Corps and develop in their family readiness program.

“It lets people know that we’re more family oriented than they think,” said Lance Cpl. Kevin Felix, a field radio operator with the battalion.

Lane said that with 478 participants registered for the run, the battalion’s morale and family readiness program were both demonstrated as strong.

“It’s evident by the sheer volume of people that came out tonight. Everyone brought their kids and animals and they’re all decorated and glowed out,” Lane said. “I just think events like this tend to bring people together and [promote] more cohesion and camaraderie.”

As Felix’s first unit, the battalion has made a positive impact on him so far.

“A lot of people say that the worst unit is the one that you’re going to and the best unit is the one that you’re leaving. I think that’s [wrong],” Felix said. “The best unit is the one that you make the most connections at and that you feel is very family oriented.”

According to Kelley Kruzel, the family readiness advisor for the battalion, 8th Comm. Bn. can look forward to upcoming self-defense, kayaking trips and a beach bash in August.
