FOUNTAIN, Colo. - It is stated in the seven Army Values that selfless service is putting the welfare of the nation, the Army and your subordinates before your own, and is larger than just one person. In serving your country, you are doing your duty loyally without thought of recognition or gain.

Soldiers from Company C, 4th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, exemplified the definition of selfless service by helping build homes in Fountain, Colorado, May 28.

"We were honored and privileged to help build a house with Habitat for Humanity,"Capt. Matthew B. Haselhorst, commander, Company C, 4-4 ARB, 4th CAB. "Just knowing that it will go a family that needs it makes us feel great. We are grateful to help out the Front Range community, a community that has given so much to us. This is our way to give back."

Brandy Crisman, future home recipient of a Habitat for Humanity home, explains what recipients have to do in order to receive their home and is proud and thankful for the Soldiers that volunteer to help build the homes.

"I'm a single parent with two kids," said Crisman. "I have to complete a total 350 working hours helping Habitat for Humanity build the homes as part of receiving my new home. I have to complete 200 hours on my own. I have get friends and family to volunteer for a 100 hours. 50 hours come from volunteers like the military or other volunteers."

"It is so awesome that Soldiers from CAB volunteer so often," said Crisman. "Volunteers help build at least 90 percent of the homes. The houses wouldn't get built without them. The house we are receiving because of volunteers like these Soldiers [4-4 ARB] is truly a blessing for me and my kids."

Haselhorst said the volunteer work not only helps the community but benefits his Soldiers as well.

"This type of volunteer work helps Soldiers understand and develop themselves," Haselhorst. "Soldiers get to see the community they live in and learn how to give back to that community. They grow as Soldiers and citizens of the community."

"I believe volunteering instills a sense of purpose, pride, and community, said Haselhorst. "I also believe it improves their abilities as Soldiers and it builds there confidence because they are dealing with things they are not used to. The also get to learn carpentry as a trade in the process."
