FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. - A $7.7-million military construction project for a 20,000-square-foot communications headquarters building at Fort Indiantown Gap Air Guard Station is starting to take shape atop a commanding overlook at the installation.

The one-story structure, started in October 2014, is being built from one of the highest vantage points offered in the cantonment area of the installation. As a result, building construction is easily visible to commuters on Fisher Avenue and from most parts of the installation.

The building will primarily house administrative and training space for the 193rd Special Operation Wing's 211th Engineering Installation Squadron and 271st Combat Communications Squadron when completed in late October 2015 according to a project fact sheet.

“The Air Guard has been working on this project for over 10 years to consolidate Air Guard Station resources on the installation from Area 1 and 2 into a modernized Area 1,” said Maj. Joel Sattazahn, Fort Indiantown Gap Air Guard Station base civil engineer. “We are close to being 60 percent complete with our long-term vision for a sustainable Fort Indiantown Gap Air Guard Station that sets an example on a national level for a truly modernized and efficient military campus.”

“We've also had excellent support for funding this vision from our elected officials, to leadership at the state and federal level, as well as from officials at the National Guard Bureau,” Sattazahn added. “This particular project and progress on the overall vision wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for all of their support and the proven ability of the team here to design and execute.”

The energy-efficient structure is being built to LEED silver certification standards. LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices.

This facility will replace antiquated WWII-era structures lacking modern safety standards and substantially reduce energy and maintenance costs. It also consolidates similar functions under one roof while greatly enhancing occupant safety according to Fort Indiantown Gap Air Guard Station civil engineers.

“Our focus on completing this vision has been to put people first,” said Sattazahn. “All of the large buildings that have been completed to date have been with our personnel and their placement as a priority; the non-people centered buildings with supply, warehouse and utility functions have and will follow.”

An extended perimeter fence, approximately 150 parking spaces, storm-water retention ponds and a meadow planted with native plantings are also features of the project according to project specifications.

The new building was designed by Ganflec Architects and Engineers of Camp Hill, Cumberland County, and the general contractor for the project is Lobar Associates of Dillsburg, York County.
