    Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. - U.S. military members serve at home and overseas, protecting this country, and service members here take it a step farther – they donate blood.

Though many service members are unable to donate because of time served overseas, “The joint base donated a total of 783 units over the past year,” said Beth Toll, Red Cross external communications manager.

The donated blood goes to help service members in need and local community members as well.

“It is important to give blood,” said Master Sgt. Thomas Wigington, 87th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Public Health flight chief and installation blood program manager. “We’re giving part of our selves to help out others.”

The joint base was honored for the second time with the Red Cross’ Military Award June 18. Wigington was there to accept the award on behalf of the joint base.

“There is a great partnership between the Red Cross and the base,” said Toll. “They get out, they roll up their sleeves and help save lives."

“The blood drive program is growing on base,” added Toll. “This is a very important relationship with the joint base to help save lives.”

Blood drives happen about once every two and a half month at Tommy B’s Community Activities Center and units can also hold their own blood drives. To set up a drive or learn more about upcoming base drives, visit the base website, social media or call Master Sgt. Thomas Wigington at (609) 754-9573.
