    SOUTHCOM selects Airman to command JTF-Guantanamo

    MIAMI - U.S. Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly, commander, U.S. Southern Command, has selected Brig. Gen. Jose Monteagudo to replace Rear Adm. "KC" Cozad as commander, Joint Task Force-Guantanamo.

    A change of command ceremony will be conducted July 1 at Naval Station Guantanamo.

    Monteagudo will be the first U.S. Air Force general officer to lead Joint Task Force Guantanamo. He has served the last 22 months as Kelly's lead for oversight of the task force's detention operations as the deputy director of Operations at SOUTHCOM Headquarters.

    Monteagudo, whose last command was the 944th Fighter Wing, Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, from January 2011 through January 2013, is a command pilot with more than 3,700 F-16 hours.

    Joint Task Force Guantanamo is a separate entity from Naval Station Guantanamo (www.cnic.navy.mil/regions/cnrse/installations/ns_guantanamo_bay.html), and is responsible for the safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees.
