RALEIGH, N.C. – Runners sweated throughout the third annual Minuteman Muster race at the North Carolina National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina, May 16, 2015.

The Minuteman Muster is a race and public open house hosted by the North Carolina National Guard and FS Series Race Production, designed to bring the community together for a day full of camaraderie, food, fun and good old fashioned physical training. The profits support the North Carolina National Guard Association’s Educational Foundation, which provides educational opportunities for Soldiers and Airmen of all ranks and their family members based on scholastic achievement and community service.

Although the race is only in its third year, it attracted approximately five hundred participants this year and numerous spectators. Runners had the opportunity to compete in an individual 5K or an individual or team 8K race. The first male and females finisher overall, as well as the first three males and females in each of the following age groups: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 and over were awarded medals.

Military support organizations, North Carolina National Guard Family Readiness Groups and several food trucks provided informational displays and concessions before, during and after the races. The public event included displays of military, first-responder vehicles and equipment available for exploration by the young and young at heart, as well as an inflatable obstacle course.

U.S. Army Maj. Tony Daschke, the race director and deputy commander of the North Carolina Recruiting and Retention Battalion, expressed that the evolution the Minuteman Muster has experienced since its inception is incredibly beneficial.

“When we started this we were small, I believe we had less than a hundred people, now we’re at five hundred,” said Daschke.

This year is the first year that Daschke was in charge of the race. To support him, his family participated in the race.

Jalane Daschke, a runner in the 5K race, brought along her son and his best friend, both six years old.

“This is their first race together,” said Jalane Daschke, “They’re best friends and I just see them running together throughout their life, and it’s just going to be fun for them and fun for me to see that.”

The overall 5K winners within each age group are as follows: 19 and under, Josiah Jackson; 20 to 29, Adam Chapman; 30 to 30, Laura Closson; 40 to 49: Stewart Smith; 50 and over, Al Cooper. Overall 8K winners within each age group are: 19 and under, Jose Martinez; 20 to 29, Joshua Autry; 30 to 30, Michelle Langan; 40 to 49, Bobby Wheeler, 50 and over, Jack Threadgill.
