MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, Ariz. - Several Pilots with Marine Attack Squadron 542 participated in division leader qualification training while aboard Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, June 20, 2015.
The Marines of VMA-542 were in Yuma to conduct their deployment for training exercise which provided an opportunity for the pilots and flight crew to obtain required training certifications with the AV-8B Harriers.
“The division leader work-up is an advanced qualification where section leaders, who are able to lead two jets, are built up to being able to lead four jets,” said Capt. James W. Pollard, pilot training officer with VMA-542.
VMA-542’s main focus while conducting the DFT is to focus on the training needed to properly combat today’s current threats.
“Part of being a division leader is being able to think through three other pilot’s cockpits,” Pollard said. “They need to be aware of the division’s fuel, available weapons and remaining flight time as well as assigning search areas and being able to de-conflict the altitude between four jets instead of two.”
Another advantage of the division leader training is being able to bring more weapons to the fight in a timelier manner.
The 2d Marine Aircraft Wing is II Marine Expeditionary Force’s aviation force-in-readiness – prepared to task-organize, deploy and sustain combat-ready forces on a moment’s notice to any clime or place in support of a Marine Air-Ground Task Force, Naval, Joint and Combatant Command (COCOM) requirements.
