    Allied Joint Force Command Naples

SIBIU, Romania – The main body of NATO forces participating in exercise Trident Joust 15 landed at the Sibiu International Airport today. One hundred and fifteen NATO members from Allied Joint Force Command Naples arrived in a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, which marks the first time this type of military cargo plane has touched down at the Sibiu Airport.

Trident Joust 15 marks the first time a Joint Force Command headquarters has deployed to Romania, where JFC Naples will train in its position as the 2015 NATO Response Force.

"Exercise Trident Joust began two days ago, its main purpose being to test the capability and responsiveness of Allied Joint Force Command Naples in the role of command and control for the 2015 NATO Response Force,” said Canadian army Lt. Gen. D. Michael Day, the exercise commander and JFC Naples deputy commander. "For the first time, Exercise Trident Joust 15 sees a NATO headquarters proving the ability to shift both the command and control of an operation midway through an exercise, to a forward location, which I assure you, is no small task.

The landing of the C-17 represents the largest contingent of forces to arrive in Romania over the last week, with four previous flights arriving at Sibiu. The final two flights are scheduled to land June 21 and will complete the physical shift of manpower to the deployed location. The staggering of the arrival of forces over one week allowed JFC Naples to maintain oversight of exercise operations while personnel transitioned between locations.

All previous flights were supported through Romanian airlift capabilities utilizing a C-130H and C-27J. The C-17 which landed today originates from Papa Air Base, Hungary and is part of the Heavy Airlift Wing.

Trident Joust 15 is also a part of a larger series of exercises referred to as Allied Shield. As with all NATO exercises, the exercises in this series are defensive in nature and are part of NATO's assurance measures. The activities will focus on enhancing interoperability, readiness and responsiveness among Allied and partner nations. The exercise will conclude on June 28, 2015.
