    Allied Joint Force Command Naples

CINCU, Romania – Allied Joint Force Command Naples, the NATO Response Force command and control headquarters for 2015, will conduct exercise Trident Joust 15 from June 18-28, 2015.

Trident Joust 15 marks the first time a Joint Force Command headquarters will deploy to Romania, and the first time an NRF command and control exercise will conduct the shifting of control to a deployed location. In effect, meaning the headquarters will temporarily move to Romania for the duration of the exercise.

The Joint Logistics Support Group (JLSG) based out of JFC Naples is also deploying its headquarters to Bulgaria to exercise its capability in support of Trident Joust 15. This will be the first time the JLSG headquarters has deployed to Bulgaria and exercise in a large scale, complex and contemporary operating environment, to confirm the JLSG HQ’s ability to deploy and operate as a theater level logistics command.

"The exercise is designed to test the abilities of Joint Force Command Naples to lead a collective defense operation for the Alliance," said Admiral Mark Ferguson, commander of JFC Naples, when he announced the exercise last month with the Romanian Minister of Defense. "This deployment will test the full operational capability of my staff by shifting command and control between my headquarters in Naples and the forward deployed elements in Cincu."

Trident Joust 15 is also a part of a larger series of exercises referred to as Allied Shield. As with all NATO exercises, the exercises in this series are defensive in nature and are part of NATO’s assurance measures. The activities will focus on enhancing interoperability, readiness and responsiveness among Allied and partner nations.

The Allied Shield series includes Exercise Noble Jump, the first training deployment of Allied high-readiness units under the new Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) framework. It also includes BALTOPS, a major Allied naval exercise in Poland and the Baltic Sea; Saber Strike, a significant land exercise in the Baltic States. In total, approximately 14,000 troops will participate in this series of training events taking place across the Alliance in June 2015.

"These exercises … demonstrate that NATO is transforming and adapting to meet the new security challenges facing the Alliance as identified at the Wales Summit," said Admiral Ferguson. "Allied Shield demonstrates the resolve of the Alliance, its more responsive capabilities, and the commitment of each member nation to collective defense."

Romania and Bulgaria are providing additional support and resources to the exercise as host nations. Romania has linked its national live-fire exercise, VIFORUL 15, to exercise Trident Joust to help enhance training for all partners.

"I appreciate the efforts of our partner nations as we work on other measures to transform the Alliance," said Admiral Ferguson.

Twenty five NATO nations and more than 1,000 personnel will participate in Trident Joust 15, combined with an additional 200 taking part in the Romania live fire exercise, which together will reinforce the NATO Readiness Action Plan announced at the Wales Summit while also projecting assurance and collective defence to all NATO allies.

The mission of JFC Naples is to prepare for, plan and conduct military operations in order to preserve the peace, security and territorial integrity of Alliance member states. On an annual basis, JFC Naples alternates operational command of the NRF with JFC Brunssum.
