    22nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1), operated by the Military Sealift Command, departed Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia, for the commencement of Fleet Experimentation (FLEX) period one from June 14–22.

The FLEX Campaign portion of SPS-JHSV 15 examines the composition, transport, deployment and employment of mission enabling Adaptive Force Packages (AFPs) and associated command and control constructs and their ability to support various missions. These missions include expeditionary mine countermeasures, afloat forward staging base, maritime command and control and counter-illicit trafficking.

AFPs will focus on locally identified needs, such as port security, noncommissioned officer professional development, operational risk management, medical readiness, outboard motor maintenance and patrol craft operations.

These AFPs come from Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit SIX, U.S. Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command, Expeditionary Combat Camera, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit 202, USMC 8th Engineering Support Battalion and Navy Warfare Development Command.

"Although JHSV-1 was primarily designed to swiftly move large amounts of mission cargo, it is capable of so much more," said Capt. Robert J. Cepek, mission commander of Southern Partnership Station 2015. "During Fleet Experimentation periods and while training alongside our partners in Central and South America, we intend to further explore what Spearhead can do. The SOUTHCOM area of operations is the perfect environment to conduct such innovative operations."

During the FLEX Campaign Spearhead personnel had the opportunity to sharpen their skills. FLEX Campaign period two is set to take place in July at Key West, Fla.

SPS-JHSV 15 is a U.S. Navy deployment focused on subject matter expert changes with partner nation militaries and security forces.

U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. 4th Fleet support U.S. Southern Command’s joint and combined military operations by employing maritime forces in cooperative maritime security operations to maintain access, enhance interoperability and build enduring partnerships in order to enhance regional security and promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Caribbean, Central and South American regions.
