FORT MYER, VA - Two military spouses sat for an interview with the Pentagram to discuss their frustrations and issues with drivers who abuse the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall speed limits and the four-way stop signs at the intersection of Lee Avenue and McNair Road.
Military moms Beth Poppas and Morri Landes have a warning for unlawful drivers: Joint base residents are also monitoring the rash of erratic driving and reporting infractions to the JBM-HH Police Department and joint base leadership. Their goal is to return their avenue between the Old Post Chapel and the Fort Myer Officers’ Club into a safe haven where their children can play.
Their combined pleas are to just obey the traffic laws for the sake of the children who live in the neighborhood.
“More often than not, cars slow-roll [through the intersection] or a car completely goes through the stop sign,” Poppas said about the Lee Avenue and McNair Road intersection. “Rarely do people stop. That’s extremely frustrating. The speed limit is 15 miles per hour, but 45 miles per hour seems to be the norm.”
Landes said the problem is magnified by another safety issue: illegally-parked cars in a residential area.
“I see a lot of speeding. The issue often is we get people parking on the street and not all of them are residents,” Landes said. “That puts people coming from between cars onto the street. A car going too fast may not always see them crossing the street - especially the kids.”
Signage in Poppas’ and Landes’ residential area clearly state on-street parking is for only residents and guests.
Hearing of their plight, JBM-HH Deputy Police Chief Maj. Jennifer Ruggles passed on words of reassurance that anti-speeding patrols are now in place to ticket violators.
“As a mother, they should be assured that we’re out there to ensure the safety of their families,” Ruggles said.
