JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. -- I Corps conducted a farewell ceremony to honor Canadian General, Brig. Gen. Carl Turenne, who served as the deputy commanding general, I Corps, for two years at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, June 10.

Lt. Gen. Stephen Lanza, commanding general, I Corps, thanked Turenne for his hard work and services to the Puget Sound region and spoke about the impact the Turenne family had on the community.

“Today we are here to honor the Turenne family and bid a farewell,” said Lanza. “They have been a great part of this family here and Joint Base Lewis-McChord.”

Turenne gave a speech during the event, thanked many of the people in attendance and said he was honored to be a part of the I Corps family.

“I would like to give thanks to the many support teams on Joint Base Lewis-McChord for the work they have done and will continue to do in the future,” said Turenne.

During the ceremony Lanza presented awards to Brig. Gen. Carl Turenne and his wife, Johanne Turenne, for their service while stationed at JBLM. Turenne received the Legion of Merit and Johanne received the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal for the contributions to the well-being of the Service members and improved readiness of “America’s Corps.”

“As I have said many times, Turenne is not the Canadian deputy commanding general, he is our deputy commanding general that just happens to be Canadian,” Lanza added. “He came to us with tremendous experience from the United Nations and numerous deployments, and he has really helped us operationalize the Corps.”

Turenne will take over commanding the 5th Canadian Division in Halifax, Canada. The 5th Division is one of only three Canadian divisions in the Canadian Army.

“I have never seen such a strong relationship between the military and the local communities,” Turenne said. “This is due to hard work and leadership at all levels. Keep nurturing this relationship, it is very important.”
