SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) Sailors, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Melissa M. Goldstein and Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Fredelyne G. Dolores, have been named the Senior and Junior Enlisted Woman of the Year (EWOY), respectively, at NMCSD.

This year’s finalists for the award were among some of the most dedicated and qualified Sailors NMCSD has to offer. In the end, however, it was Goldstein and Dolores who most embodied leadership, mentorship, community involvement and Navy professionalism.

“This award is a career highlight for me,” said Dolores, who is currently assigned to NMCSD’s dermatology department. “Being selected EWOY, to me, is a sign I am on the right track of things and perhaps closer to my personal and professional goals.”

However, for both Goldstein and Dolores joining the Navy was always about more than just themselves.

Goldstein, currently assigned to the NMCSD career counseling department, comes from a family with a long military tradition going back to her grandfather, who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in the 1940s. So it was no surprise when she decided to join the military after the events of 9/11.

“I felt a duty to assist in the fight and help keep our country safe,” said Goldstein.

Dolores also sought out the opportunity to serve.

“I joined the Navy not only for a better future for me, but more importantly for my family,” said Dolores. “I wanted to set an example for my siblings to emulate.”

Goldstein and Dolores admit they would not have won this award and be where they are today if it was not for mentors along the way.

“HM1 Goldstein and I have grown up in the Navy together, ever since Goldstein was a promising E2 at Naval Branch Health Clinic Groton,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Claudette G. Arenas, the NMCSD Preventive Medicine leading petty officer and longtime mentor to Goldstein.

“HM1 Goldstein's number one mission will always be her Sailors,” said Arenas. “I have seen first-hand how she is able to reach and make a difference in every Sailor both junior and senior to her.”

For Dolores, it has been hard to narrow down her mentors to just one single individual. Nevertheless, the contributions made by those along the way have helped her become the Sailor she is today.

“My leaders and mentors were always there to provide me with insights and evaluations to learn from,” said Dolores. “They are always there as my support and have always given me the room to grow to better myself and to become a better and more effective leader.”

Mentorship has played an invaluable role in the development of both Goldstein and Dolores. However, it may be those junior Sailors that look up to them that may have the longest lasting impact.

“My Sailors are the reason why I get to work early and am excited about getting to the office,” said Dolores. “Each and every one of my Sailors has contributed to me winning this award, because if it wasn't for them and all their hard work, trust and respect, I wouldn't be the person I am today.”

The senior enlisted winner of this year’s award also had some advice to share. Goldstein encourages her junior Sailors to “always look for new tasks, new jobs and better yourself every day.”
