FORT WORTH, Texas. –Over 50 junior Marines from six different units participated in the installation’s first Lance Corporal Leadership and Ethics Seminar at the Marine Aircraft Group 41 Headquarters building aboard Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, May 16-17 2015.

Marines from Marine Aircraft Group 41, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 41, Marine Air Control Squadron 24, Marine Wing Support Squadron 473, Detachment B, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 112, and Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 234 attended the seminar.

“The Marine Corps is built on small unit leadership,” said Staff Sgt. Joel Chaverri, seminar co-chief for MAG-41. “The goal of this seminar is to develop that leadership within Lance Corporals.”

“Prior to the Lance Corporal Seminar, the first opportunity for formal leadership instruction was Corporal’s course. The goal here is to teach Marines these leadership qualities before they become non-commissioned officers,” said Chaverri.

The seminar examines the leadership fundamentals outlined in Leading Marines (a distance education course required for promotion to Corporal) in further detail and offers an opportunity for in-depth discussion between mentors and peers on key issues affecting Marines.

“[The seminar] was very hands-on and helped me to think deeper about what it means to be a Lance Corporal,” said LCpl. Mayra Villafranca, an administrative specialist with MAG-41 Headquarters. “It also gave me perspective about what type of problems we may face now and as an NCO, and how good leaders handle those issues.”

Topics discussed in the seminar included Marine Corps core values, leadership traits, mentoring, professionalism, and proficiency, among others.

“Unlike Leading Marines, which is a computerized course, the seminar takes all of the ideas presented and applies them to the real world,” said Chaverri. “The ability to discuss in detail with each other changes the way the Marines think of the topics as their beliefs, values and morals are challenged.”

The seminar encourages personal development and reminds Lance Corporals why they are important to the success of the Marine Corps.

“This course made me realize some areas where I could use improvement,” said Villafranca, “but it also helped me see myself as a leader. I think the seminar helps you see where you’re at and get an idea of where you want to be before taking on a new leadership position.”

The seminar will be a requirement for Lance Corporals across the Marine Corps as of October 1. MALS-41 and VMGR- 234 have additional Lance Corporal Seminars planned here for the month of June.
