WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG) held a change of command ceremony, June 4, at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown-Cheatham Annex.

Rear Adm. Keith M. Jones relieved Rear Adm. Valerie K. Huegel as Commander, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group.

Special guest in attendance included guest speaker Rear Adm. Frank A. Morneau, commander, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command. During the ceremony, Morneau congratulated Huegel on her accomplishments and awarded her the Legion of Merit for exceptional meritorious performance from September 2013 to June 2015.

During Morneau’ s speech he made note of the significance of the day not as it related to the event, but by historical context of the day which marked the 73rd anniversary of the Battle of Midway.

“This group [NAVELSG] that since we sailed in harm’s way with those three carriers at Midway and turn the tide of the fight in the pacific, has existed and been able in fact to shore up our logistics line which did win the Second World War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and every war since” said Morneau.

Huegel has served as commander since September 2013.

During her time as commander Huegel directed combat support services capabilities in support of Operation Enduing Freedom. Huegel’s next assignment is with Director, U.S. Central Command Deployment and Distribution Operations Center in Kuwait.

“For me, today is bitter sweet as I say goodbye to NAVELSG,” said Huegel, “an organization I have been honored to be a part for 12 of my 34 years in the Navy.”

The ceremony took place in the rain at the landmark site for NAVELSG, its two land-based dual-pedestal cranes representing the latest, state-of-the art in shipboard crane systems which allow the Navy’s cargo handlers to receive the most relevant, effective and safest shipboard crane training.

Jones previous assignment was as reserve director, Logistics Programs and Business Operations. His previous assignment was as commander Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group Forward Mike where he also served as the commander, U.S. 5th Fleet Task Group 56.3 at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

“Today is a homecoming of sorts for me” said Jones, “Just three short years ago I was returning from Kuwait as part of NAVESLG Forward on what was my second tour on the staff here.”

Jones completed his first headquarters tour in the mid 1990s as a Lt. Cmdr.

Huegel and Jones both serve in the Navy Reserve and have served at commands both as reserve component and active duty sailors. In his civilian career Jones works as the Manager, Corporate Diversity and Inclusion for Toyota Motor Corp.

NAVESLG is a vital enabler of Maritime Pre-positioning Forces (MPF), Joint Logistics Over the Shore (JLOTS) operations and maritime forces ashore providing expeditionary cargo handling services for surface, air and terminal operations, tactical fueling, and ordnance handling/ reporting in support of worldwide Naval, Joint, interagency and combined forces/organizations.
