ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. – The matinee opening of the theater is intended for families and children, and will show "Charlotte’s Web."

The theater has been used for promotion ceremonies, commander’s calls, change of commands and other ceremonies, but has not played movies for more than two years.

The theater will be open to everyone with base access and will host one free show every other Saturday, in addition to a weekly matinee show during the summer.

“The shows will be free with concessions available for purchase,” said April Shobe, 97th Force Support Squadron Freedom Community Center director. “The theater will play second-run movies, which are movies that have already been shown in theaters, as well as other popular movie titles.”

The theater’s movie system has been completely upgraded, to include a new sound system, subwoofers, a new projector, and a digital movie player. This equipment replaced the previous equipment and modernized the theater.

“It used to be like stereo sound, but we have upgraded the sound system to be 7.1 surround-sound with new subwoofers,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Eric Helms, 97th Communications Squadron superintendent of the operations flight. The 97th CS assisted in the upgrade, installing about 4,000 feet of sound cable.

“I really think the sound quality is amazing,” he said. “Some good money and some good time has been spent making sure the sound quality is the best we can do, and I think it turned out really well.”

Shobe and Helms both agree the opening of the theater will have a positive effect on Altus Air Force Base patrons.

“I think the opening of the theater will give the families and dorm residents of Altus AFB a new, great venue for entertainment, and that it will help improve the quality of life on base,” said Shobe.

The scheduled list of movies and show times will be posted at http://www.altusfss.com/.
