JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The familiar strains of Pomp and Circumstance filled the room, as hundreds of students in graduation apparel filed down the rows of the Base Theater, ready for the moment that marked the achievement of their academic pursuits – the conferring of degrees.

The 20th Annual Commanding General’s Graduation Ceremony took place at the Base Theater aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Friday.

Students in the ceremony participated in the Voluntary Education Program, a Department of Defense service that allows veterans, service members and their family members to pursue their academic goals while deployed, in garrison or holding down full-time jobs and raising
    families.

“You clearly represent the cutting edge of higher education in the 20th century, where higher education is accessible to all,” Col. Yori Escalante, deputy commander of Marine Corps Installations East – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “I applaud you for bringing the best of your respective universities right here to Camp Lejeune.”

The graduation aboard Camp Lejeune is special in that it gives students enrolled at off-site universities the opportunity to participate in a formal graduation ceremony.

The educational institutions represented at the event were Coastal Carolina Community College, Campbell University Adult and Online Education, Southern Illinois University, University of North Carolina Wilmington, American Military University, University of Phoenix Military
Division, Boston University and Webster University.

“Graduating from Coastal Carolina Community College has given me the opportunity to expand my education and the courage to continue my education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, in which I have been accepted into the Social Work Program,” said Jackeline Mancha, a native of Laredo, Texas.

After the ceremony the new graduates filtered out the building, tassels to the left and degrees in hand, to greet the loved ones excitedly waiting to congratulate them.

“Having my friends and number one supporter, my husband, attend my graduation ceremony, and seeing their facial expressions of how happy and proud they were to see me graduate made the experience all worth it,” Mancha said.
