SALINAS, Puerto Rico - Citizen soldiers with the 101st Troop Command, Puerto Rico National Guard, participated May 30 in a Mountain Bicycle Ride organized by the 101st Troop Command’s Unit Ministry Team at Camp Santiago Joint Maneuver Training Center, Salinas, Puerto Rico.
The purpose of the event was to motivate the use of bicycles as a mean of transportation around the camp, promote exercise and unit cohesion.
“A healthy body as well as a healthy mind are necessary to praise God,” said Maj. Julio A. Vera, chaplain with the 101st Troop Command. “This is why it’s so important to stay physically fit.”
This was the first time an activity like this has been done during annual training, and it was a complete success.
“There were representatives from different units such as the 130th Engineer and 125th Military Police,” said Vera. “We all had a great time, and the best part was that nobody sustained any injuries.”
The UMT has gotten good feedback from the activity.
Some of the participants have asked to repeat the event at next year’s annual training.
“I really enjoyed the activity, and I’m really hoping they do it again,” said Staff Sgt. Jazmín Crespo the human resources manager with the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 101st Troop Command. “It was a great way of showing camaraderie between the troops.”
According to Vera this was just one of a series of new activities the UMT has organized for the annual training 2015.
