MUNIZ AIR FORCE BASE, CAROLINA, Puerto Rico – About 140 Citizen-Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 296th Infantry Regiment, Puerto Rico Army National Guard departed to Fort Polk, Louisiana, as part of their Annual Training 2015.
The Soldiers will spend 11 days of training with the 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Louisiana Army National Guard, which will be focused on anti-tank weapons, mortars and snipers due to the fact that in Puerto Rico, because of range limitations, these weapons can’t be fired.
“I’m very confident about the Soldiers’ ability to perform this important training,” said Lt. Col. Hector L. Santiago, the battalion commander of the 1st Battalion 296th Infantry Regiment.
An element from Delta Company, an Anti-Tank company, will fire live ammunitions for the first time with the M41A4 TOW Improved Target Acquisition System in conjunction with the 256th IBCT.
The priority of the training will be firing the primary weapons, said Sgt. 1st Class Omar Flores assistant operations noncommissioned officer with the 1st Battalion 296th Infantry Regiment. A mortar platoon will fire the 120mm and 81mm mortars with live and blank ammunitions.
“The expectations of the 296th is to be efficiently trained and to arrive home safe,” said Maj. Wilfred Montano operations officer with the 1st Battalion 296th Infantry Regiment.
