FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa.- Tucked-away on the installation along Indiantown Creek lies the Fort Indiantown Gap Fish and Game Conservation Club’s fish nursery. The nursery is a green-metal roofed building with, chain-link sides and a sign out front memorializing the nursery to long-time club member John Matarazzi. Inside, three bubbling concrete raceways hold thousands of Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout and Golden Rainbows.
The club has been raising fish as a cooperative nursery with the PA Fish and Game Commission since 1971, according to William Brandt, a 25-year member of the club. “We get the fish when they are only two to three inches long,” said Brandt. “By the time they leave here some of them are 15 to 16 inches long.”
Raising the fish requires a commitment from club members. The fish must be fed daily from their arrival in July to their release sometime in early spring. The water temperature and cleanliness is also constantly monitored, said Brandt.
The club looks at the trout nursery as a way of giving back to the community. “This is not just a club benefit it also is a public benefit as well,” said Brandt. Members of the public may fish at Marquette Lake, Indian Run and Shuey Lake where the trout are released.
“The partnership between the installation and the club is going to be celebrating its 55th anniversary next year. The installation is proud of such a long-standing relationship with this conservation group. Their efforts help our outdoor recreation program immensely,” said Lt. Col. Robert Hepner, garrison commander.
Other events the club members engage in are hunting, fishing, sponsoring an annual wounded warrior turkey hunt, and service projects. The club is always looking for new outdoor enthusiasts to join. Membership is open to everyone. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at the club’s headquarters located at building 13-4. For more information visit http://igapfishandgame.webs.com/
