MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Veterans and service members joined the local community to honor fallen service members during a ceremony in Beaufort, May 23.
The commemoration featured live ceremonial music and guest speakers to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s freedom while in uniform.
“We gather here to pay homage to those service members that gave their all to defend the rights of our great nation,” said Maj. Gen. Robert Hedelund, commanding general of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. “We remember our fallen comrades’ actions and support their families.”
Hedelund was a joined by North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones. Veterans and active duty service members shared their past experiences and paid respect to their fallen comrades and their families.
A flag placing ceremony closed the event as a symbol for those who have served and the lives lost in conflicts through the years. Attendees were given the opportunity to place a small flag around a standing wreath at the end of the commemoration.
“It is our duty to not only pay respect to those who have fallen, but to do everything in our power to prevent more lives from being lost,” said Hedelund.
