MANHATTAN, New York – Marines with 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment visited local high schools to showcase military sea services and greet students and faculty as part of Fleet Week New York May 22, 2015.

Marines visited two high schools and flew in on a CH-46 Sea Knight and a MV-22 Osprey with an escort from an AH-1 Cobra, which landed in fields at the schools. The Marines exited the aircraft and secured a perimeter around the field. Afterward, students and faculty meet each Marine and toured the aircraft.

Tony Gallo, a teacher in the district and on the city council of Glen Cove, New York, was excited to see the Marines and displays.

“It was an impressive display of strength,” said Gallo, who is running for mayor of Glen Cove as well. “This helps students know they can get involved with the armed forces to protect the nations freedom.”

Students and faculty took pictures with Marines, spoke with them about their job and tried on their gear.

“Interacting with the public is what fleet week is about,” said 2nd Lieutenant Kyle Jackson, the rifle platoon commander of 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment. “This helps the military educate the public on what the sea services do.”

Service members showed students maneuvers to go in and out of the aircraft and spoke to future Marines about what they can expect.

“Having people in the military show that they are regular humans the local community shows a great light when these events happen,” Gallo said. “The human element is what is missed when looking at the military and this really helped us see them up close.”

Students and faculty showed appreciation to the service members and presented them with flowers and cards.

“The thanks we were given was amazing,” Jackson said. “We had a lot of fun talking to the students and it helps them connect and see Marines within their age.”

Gallo and other teachers were happy to see the students get excited and speak to the service members.

“We are grateful for everything the service members do to protect our freedom,” Gallo said. “Fleet week is a great time for us to interact with military members and learn from them and thank them for everything they do.”
