NEW YORK - Marines, sailors, and Coast Guardsmen were given the opportunity to tour the MLB.com Headquarters May 21, during Fleet Week New York. MLB.com Headquarters opened their doors to servicemembers for a private tour of the building and all the headquarters’ capabilities.

Fleet Week has been held nearly every year since 1984, it is the city’s celebration of the sea services. It provides citizens of New York City and the surrounding tri-state area an opportunity to meet Marines, sailors, and Coast Guardsmen as well as see the capabilities of today’s maritime services.

Major League Baseball is very active in their partnerships with the military and the MLB is a strong supporter of the troops all around, said Michael Furno, the senior director of production and development for Major League Baseball advanced media.

Along with the tour, Furno took the opportunity to do a show express written consent aboard the flight deck of the USS San Antonio as well as take part in the parade of ships as they came to port in New York City.

“The second the opportunity presented itself we jumped all over it,” said Furno.

Servicemembers are offered many opportunities to take part in different events throughout Fleet Week, but an interest in sports may have influenced some Marines to choose to visit and tour the headquarters.

Marine Pfc. Derek Pelkey, an infantry rifleman said he grew up playing baseball since he was four years old and is a huge Yankee’s fan.

“It’s a dream come true, and us being able to come here and watch what makes the games on TV so cool, it’s just amazing,” said Pelkey.

The servicemembers who attended the tour were given a first-hand look at what the MLB.com Headquarters is capable of. They were guided throughout the building and were shown different aspects such as the Replay Operations Center, production rooms, video game developing, and even a chance to sit down and talk with MLB pitcher Jeff Nelson.

The days leading up to the tour the headquarters was buzzing and the whole office wanted to be a part of this opportunity and were very supportive of the visit, said Furno.

“Without the support of your behalf this wouldn’t have happened and I’m more than grateful for the opportunity,” said Pelkey, directing his gratitude to the men and women who made this tour possible.
