F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. - Firefighters are known for being ready to respond to an emergency 24/7. Working the weekend does not mean laying around waiting on a fire, however.
Ninetieth Civil Engineer Squadron Airmen spent Saturday, May 16, working to get Airman 1st Class Augustus Whitt, 90th CES firefighter, certified to drive the P22 fire truck. Whitt underwent the practical driving portion of the training in a parking lot on base.
Whitt had to navigate a cone set-up in the truck during the training. Certification also requires computer-based training, and altogether the training lasts about a month, Whitt said.
“It’s big and has a huge turning radius,” Whitt said.
David Bushong, 90th CES driver operator and firefighter, observed the training that day and said being certified on the truck is a matter of mission readiness.
“You have to be familiar with the truck to get to an emergency safely,” he said.
Drivers must complete the course within 30 minutes without hitting too many cones to pass.
