NEW YORK – Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel spent the afternoon helping out at the Carter Burden Leonard Covello Senior Program, a division of the Carter Burden Center for the Aging, as part of a Fleet Week community relations outreach project, May 20.

The service members toured the facility then spent time serving lunch, taking pictures and shared stories with the excited crowd in the cafeteria.

“I think (having service members show up) is a big surprise to our members and it makes them very happy,” said Amanda Santiago, volunteer coordinator at the center. “There are a lot of members that tell us war stories all the time. Having service members here gives them a chance to relate those stories and share the camaraderie of their service. It’s great that you guys do this.”

The outreach project provided not only an opportunity to help serve senior citizens in the community, but also a chance to participate in a rewarding experience.

“I think it’s important to get out into the community and volunteer, especially as a representative of the Navy,” said Air Traffic Controlman 2nd Class Nathan Poulin, a Burling, Vermont, native and Navy Reservist assigned to Tactical Air Control Squadron (TACRON) 22.

“The seniors at the center were extremely grateful to have us there and excited to ask us questions and share their stories. It felt really great.”

Throughout the afternoon, a smiling face waited around every corner as service members and senior citizens swapped stories and snapped “selfies.”

“I am very appreciative that a group of young men and women gave up their day, when they could have been out sight-seeing and enjoying New York, to come to the senior center and serve us lunch,” said Pauline Frederick, a member at the Senior Center. “I am very appreciative. Thank you. And thank you to the Navy for having such great men and women in the organization.”
