MISAWA, Japan – Sailors stationed and deployed at Misawa Air Base, Japan took part in Misawa City’s Lake Ogawara cleanup May 16.
A 50-person team consisting of Sailors and Navy civilian contractors teamed up with Misawa citizens to pick up trash and separate it for recycling during the two-hour event.
Students from Misawa’s high school along with other Misawa citizens participated in the event.
“It was a pleasure to go out there and help our local counterparts and enjoy the day picking up trash and socializing. We enjoy the beach just as much as they do and we enjoy being a part of this community,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuels) Thomas Johnson, assigned to Naval Air Facility, Misawa, from Wilsonville, Ala.
The volunteers removed more than 200 pounds of debris that included plastic bottles, aluminum cans, tree limbs and paper products.
Misawa’s citizens supplied soft drinks and water during the event and Misawa Air Base’s volunteers got the opportunity to socialize with Misawa’s citizens during the cleanup.
