ST. CROIX, U.S. Virgin Islands - U.S. Virgin Islands National Guard soldiers filled the St. Croix Educational Complex track for the 104th Troop Command Ironman competition held during the early morning hours Saturday, May 16, 2015.
The competition consisted of 10 soldiers; three from the 630th Quartermaster Detachment, three from the 651th Maintenance Company Detachment, two from the 661th Military Police Detachment and two from the 1-114 Aviation Detachment.
The competition consisted of standard Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) events. These events were push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2-mile run, with the run being the highlight of the morning.
“It was the first time I ever participated in a competition like that without team mates,” said Spc. N’Qwanda Williams of the 630th Quartermaster Detachment. “I would like to do it again, it was a great experience.”
In the stands fellow soldiers cheered and waved on the competitors, encouraging each of them to push themselves harder than ever in order to win. Competition was fierce and each soldier put forth their best effort in representing their respective unit.
Each participant competed to win each event along with vying to win the Ironman as a whole.
By the end of the competition the scores were tallied and clear winners determined. For the push-up event Spc. N’Qwanda Williams won for the females with 50 push-ups and Spc. Lamar Pelle won for the males with 96. In the sit-up event Sgt. Sherelle Freeman won with 96 and Spc. Pelle won again with 88. The 2-mile run winners were Sgt. Freeman with a time of 15:55 and WO1 Joshua Salas with a time of 14:38.
The over-all winners of the competition were Sgt. Freeman with 293 points and Spc. Lamar Pelle with 273 points.
