DETROIT - Army Col. William Robare, Defense Contract Management Agency Detroit commander, recently addressed the National Contract Management Association Great Lakes State Chapter.
He was invited by the NCMA to provide an agency mission and vision overview, and explain government expectations on contractor services to Michigan-area contractors — an invitation he gladly accepted.
“Personal engagements are essential in building relationships and establishing a high level of trust with our supplier base, which in turn are absolutely critical in DCMA’s ability to accomplish our mission in the short and long term,” said Robare, who identified this type of regional, face-to-face interaction as a key public relations component of Detroit’s comprehensive on-time delivery strategy.
Donna Cappabianca, the NCMA Great Lakes state chapter president, whose organization is dedicated to providing its members with relevant professional education, certification opportunities and professional networking within the defense contracting community, explained the benefit of Robare’s visit. “I viewed this event as a great opportunity for all of the businesses involved with or wanting to be involved with Department of Defense contracts to get acquainted with DCMA folks who ultimately help the contractor fulfill their contractual obligations with the government.”
Contractors’ questions varied in terms agency functions, defense initiatives — such as Better Buying Power — and sequestration challenges.
“Attending the NCMA event with Col. Robare as guest speaker was a great opportunity to gain a better understanding of DCMA activities, and hear about ways DCMA and industry can work together in providing the best support to the warfighter,” said George Kiefer, General Electric Aviation Avionics vice president.
In addition to the commander, some DCMA Detroit Grand Rapids’ team members attended the event. They too answered questions and engaged businesses leaders as agency representatives, focusing their message on Detroit’s mission to ensure on-time delivery of quality conforming products.
Linda Shoaf, NCMA Great Lakes State Chapter West Michigan representative, thanked both Robare and the Grand Rapids team members.
“Having Col. Robare share his insights on the DCMA organization was very beneficial to the West Michigan contractors, and everyone in attendance appreciated getting to know so many of the DCMA staff. It was a great program that reinforced the importance of good communication between business and our government customers. DCMA is a great asset to the government procurement system.”
Detroit’s leadership was so pleased with the event’s outcome that similar events are on the horizon.
“The feedback from the contractors as well as our [contract management office] members who participated in the NCMA event was very positive,” said Robare. “I believe both sides will reap great benefits in recurring engagements.”
