FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. - More than 150 runners and walkers took off from Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center on Fort Huachuca, Ariz., May 9, for the 17th Annual Combat Medic 10k.
The health center hosted the race to promote health and fitness in the Sierra Vista community, and any funds raised by the event will be donated to a local charity.
“I came out because I wanted to have a goal for myself,” said 1st Lt. Michael Cohen, an operations watch officer with the 2nd Regional Cyber Center. “A 10k was something to work up to and make sure I stay in good shape. It’s a motivational thing.”
The 6.2-mile course took participants around the post, starting and ending at the health center, and was open to all members of the Fort Huachuca and Sierra Vista communities.
Maj. Brian Hayes took honors as the fastest participant, finishing the race in 37 minutes and 24 seconds. Runner Tuyen La earned recognition as the fastest female participant, with a race time of 48:55.
This year saw an increase in overall participation, and event coordinator Staff Sgt. Melita Obergh hopes to encourage even more next year.
“You don’t have to be a runner; you don’t have to love fitness,” said Obergh, the operations noncommissioned officer for the health center. “You can come out and walk, or you can come out and volunteer.”
