RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina National Guard supported the North Carolina Department of Transportation to educate high school students from Raleigh area in Carolinas about what resources are available to them once they graduate from high school at the Kerr Scott Building May 5, 2016.

“Today is a NCDOT sponsored job fair and employment initiative. It’s aimed to introduce high school students to the possibility of employment within the NCDOT,” said Master Sgt. Robert Cook, Recruiting and Retention Noncommissioned officer in charge.

The Guard representatives also played a part by explaining the different benefits that are available to students through the guard but also get students’ thinking about how they would put themselves through school and giving them a realization of if they really want to join the Guard.

“We wanted to showcase the different units we have like construction, human resources, Governor of highway safety program, and put them in one location and show students these are the different careers you can have within the transportation industry” said Ashley Goolsby, Director of Education Initiatives, NCDOT.

There were also displays of military transportation components to give students a hands on experience if they were interested in a transportation career field within the Guard.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is one of North Carolina’s largest state government agencies, with more than 14,000 employees. NCDOT works hard to provide high-quality transportation for travelers throughout North Carolina, including highways, rail, aviation, ferries, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and public transit.

“I just hope that one kid can take from it ‘oh I didn’t know I could do that’ or “there are students that don’t want to go to college, and that’s OK. Helping them to realize ‘I want to go into military’ or if they want to go to community college or just work right out of high school, ‘these are my options’ ” said Goolsby.
