BISMARCK, N.D. - The North Dakota National Guard will host a media availability Thursday, May 6 for dignitaries attending State Partnership Program (SPP) activities in Bismarck this week. The SPP is administered by the National Guard Bureau, guided by State Department foreign policy goals, and executed by the state adjutants general in support of combatant commander and U.S. Chief of Mission security cooperation objectives and Department of Defense policy goals.

The North Dakota National Guard is hosting a conference this week as a platform to officially welcome the Republic of Benin and Togolese Republic to the SPP, provide background on the capabilities of the North Dakota National Guard, introduce North Dakota culture and history and to orient personnel with the already-existing partnership with Ghana.

The media availability will be held at the National Guard’s Raymond J. Bohn Armory in Bismarck in room 387, 10:35 to 11 a.m. Media escort will be available on site.

To join the conference via telephone, call 855-509-2650 (Pass 32111#) between 10:25 and 10:35 a.m. (CDT). Media representatives who call in are requested to identify their media organization when prompted.

Among those expected to participate in the media call are the U.S. ambassador to Togo, Ambassador Robert Whitehead, the Togolese ambassador to the U.S., Ambassador Limbiye Edawe Kadangha Bariki, and Todd Whatley, deputy chief of mission, U.S. Embassy in Benin. Also expected to participate are Brig. Gen. Awal Nagnimi, chief of defense for Benin, and Maj. Kassabalou Abamy, military assistant to the Chief of Defense Staff – Togo.

Through the SPP, the North Dakota National Guard paired with Ghana in 2004 and with Benin and Togo in February 2014. The recent agreements elevate North Dakota as the first state to establish partnerships, which were determined based on each party’s needs and capabilities, with multiple neighboring countries in what has become known as a regionalization concept.
