FORT BLISS, Texas – There have been activities held in observance of the Army’s sexual assault awareness and prevention month throughout April. Stand downs, the walk a mile in her shoes event and denim day observance are just some examples.

In observance of the month of April, every brigade in the 1st Armored Division did something, just like a motorcycle ride around post.

A thunderous morning motorcade showed how the 1st Armored Division Artillery concluded the month during an event called “Roar” Against Sexual Assault on held here April 30.

During this event, the DIVARTY Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program along with the Motorcycle Safety Program gathered motorcycle riders throughout the brigade and drove around post, each participant is wearing the SHARP ribbon as a sign of their support to the Army’s SHARP program.

“Motorcycles are roaring,” said Sgt. 1st Class Cedric Storay, motorcycle rider with Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Armored Division Artillery, 1st Armored Division, “the sound shows that we are pushing hard, making noise and showing our strong stand against sexual assault.”

The goal of the Army’s SHARP program is to ensure everyone is aware of the Army-wide zero tolerance policy against sexual assault.

On Sept. 9, 2008, the Army launched the “I. A.M. Strong” campaign against sexual harassment and assault to increase Soldiers’ knowledge and awareness on the subject.

In March 2011, the Army established the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. The month of re-emphasizing the Army’s commitment against sexual harassment and assault.

The Soldiers of DIVARTY emphasized their commitment against sexual assault through the motorcycle ride around post, but also aimed to eliminate a certain stereotype.

“Sexual assault and harassment will not be tolerated; there is a certain stereotype out there that bikers (motorcycle riders) participate in that sort of behavior, and that’s not the fact,” said Sgt. 1st Class Larry A. Carson, motorcycle rider with Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Armored Division Artillery, 1st Armored Division. “It (roar) is a way to educate by bringing in all the riders together and at the same time emphasize to them the importance of SHARP to everyone.”
