FORT CARSON, Colo. -- Children were full of excitement as they pulled their parents behind them, rushing toward an armored security vehicle, Stryker fighting vehicle, patrol car and fire truck at the Child Development Center West April 30.

The static displays were set up for parents and children in celebration of the Month of the Military Child.

In 1986, Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger designated April as Month of the Military Child, wanting to honor military children for their sacrifices and courage. Since then, military installations, organizations and communities have created special events to pay tribute to military children.

“People talk about the sacrifices Soldiers make by serving our country, these children make an even greater sacrifice by supporting their parents’ while they are deployed — missing their birthdays, Christmas and other holidays and special events,” said Spc. William Banks, combat medic, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

“It feels very rewarding to be able to share something with these kids while some of their moms and dads are away,” Banks said.

The CDC West director said it is important to remember that the children also make many sacrifices while their parents are serving their country.

“It is really incredible being able to watch these children sharing time with their parents on things they work with every day,” said Carrie Perez. “I think it is also special for some of these kids who can get on that Bradley fighting vehicle or the M1 Abrams and see what their parents are doing when they are deployed — it gives them that sense of closeness with them.”

Rylan Holley, 7, son of Sgt. Chris Holley, automated logistical specialist, 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Inf. Div., said it was cool that they had an event that showed support for military children.

“It made me feel special,” he said.
