SAN ANTONIO - Joint Base San Antonio military ambassadors joined members of the Military Civilian Club to mark the first day of Fiesta San Antonio at the 23rd annual Women’s Club of San Antonio Hat Contest and Luncheon April 16.

Each year the event sparks an intense competitive spirit between both male and female entrants who sport their most distinctive and ornate head gear with an eye on winning the competition.

Proceeds from the event go to scholarships for local students and also toward restoring the historic mansion that houses the Woman's Club.

“They started to do the hats 20 to 25 years ago,” explained Angela Pfeifer, treasurer for the Women’s Club. “At that time it was the most beautiful or festive, but it’s expanded. This year, instead of a fashion show, they are concentrating on the hats and have all different categories.”

Along with the traditionally most beautiful, categories included spirit of Fiesta, vintage, glitz and glam, Texas Topper, groups, and a category just for the guys. Fancy embellishments included feather butterflies, lights, sparklers and plenty of height.

Pfeifer was very happy to have the military ambassadors join the club in celebrating Fiesta at the hat competition.

“It’s really important to have the military ambassadors participate. This is one of the official Fiesta events,” she said.

Fiesta San Antonio is the nation's third largest festival of its type behind Mardi Gras and the Rose Festival where more than 3 million people participate on more than 100 events.
