YAVORIV, Ukraine – Paratroopers from the U.S. Army's 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade and soldiers from the Ukrainian national guard's 1st Battalion, 3029th Regiment tested their level of physical readiness April 27 here in a modified version of the U.S. Army's physical fitness test.

Leaders from the 173rd Abn. Bde. and the Ukrainian national guard used the test as an opportunity to see the where their soldiers stood physically and, at the same time, gave soldiers the chance to show their abilities to their partners in a competitive setting.

The paratroopers from 173rd Abn. Bde. are in Ukraine for the first of several planned rotations to train Ukraine's newly-formed national guard as part of Fearless Guardian. Fearless Guardian is the name for the Congress-approved, Departments of State and Defense initiative under the Global Security Contingency Fund-Ukraine. The mission and the program of instruction comes at the request of the Ukrainian government.

To a lot of soldiers the event was more than a test of physical ability.

“We have been training hard,” said 1st Sgt. Christopher J. Valverde, the senior non-commissioned officer in charge of Troop B, 1st Sqdn. “This test is a good way for my paratroopers to socialize with their Ukrainian partners.”

The event combined the U.S. Army's and the Ukrainian national guard's standard physical fitness tests into a single event.

“The version we used involved aspects from each nation's test,” said Capt. Matthew Carpenter, commander of Troop B. “We took the push up and sit-up events from our test and from the Ukrainians we took the agility run, 400-meter sprint and the one-minute deadlift.”

According to a Ukrainian national guard soldier the test had some surprises, such as the sit-up event. He said it required proper form not just physical strength.

The test was challenging for all soldiers but it was a small part of the training during Fearless Guardian. The training begins with individual-movement techniques and graduates to company level field-training exercises.

Fearless Guardian is expected to last six months.
