GALVESTON, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District awarded a contract in the amount of $86,167.80 to Quality First Construction LLC, a small business, for a marine salvage operation in the Houston Ship Channel.

Work will consist of diving and salvage operations to remove a barge hatch cover, or lid used to cover the cargo area of a barge, located in approximately 48 feet of deep water in the channel near Carpenters Bayou.

“The barge cover is located below project depth in the Houston Ship Channel,” said Tricia Campbell, an operations manager with the USACE Galveston District’s Navigation Branch. “The barge cover is not currently a hazard to navigation; however, it is slowly moving downstream and we are concerned it could potentially become a hazard to navigation if not removed.”

According to Campbell, the contractor will start work in May 2015 to prepare for the salvage operation. The salvage operation is expected to occur by the end of June 2015 and will last one day.

The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
