COMBAT OUTPOST WAR EAGLE, Iraq– Iraqi army soldiers and Concerned Local Citizens are working together to ensure safety in the neighborhoods of northern Baghdad.

IA Soldiers with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 11th Iraqi Army Division, and members of the Concerned Local Citizens group, were presented awards together by Multi-National Division – Baghdad and Iraqi army leaders for their efforts in securing the Qahira and Shabakar neighborhoods during a ceremony at Combat Outpost War Eagle, Feb. 6.

Lt. Col. Wilson Shoffner, a Lawton, Okla., native, who serves as the commander of the 2nd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, currently attached to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, MND-B, and Col. John Hort, a Fayetteville, N.C., native, who serves as the 3rd BCT commander, each presented the Iraqis with certificates of appreciation for their service to their country. Iraqi army Lt. Col. Yeheya Rasol, commander, 3rd Bn., 1st Bde., 11th Iraqi Army Div., was also present to commend the IA Soldiers and CLCs.

Seven CLC members and several IA Soldiers were recognized for their hard work in securing Qahira. These CLCs helped to prevent a kidnapping and saved the life of a local national, while the IA Soldiers apprehended three individuals suspected of kidnapping a local national.

Three different CLCs were recognized for providing detailed information that resulted in the capture of three terrorists in Shabakar.

"I want to commend you for your bravery, for your love of the country of Iraq and for your willingness to work together," said Shoffner.

The honorees set an example to be followed, he said.

"If all of the other (CLCs) and Iraqi army in the city of Baghdad work together as well as you," Shoffner said. "I know in my heart that Iraq will succeed."

In addition to the certificates, Hort presented each of the awardees with 3rd BCT commander's excellence coins.

Because of the work being done by these Iraqis every day, Hort said, the rest of Iraq can sleep well at night.

"I'm counting on you (the enlisted Iraqi army soldiers) and you Sons of Iraq to carry the day," he said. "From thwarting a kidnapping to taking down terrorists, I cannot tell you how proud I am."

These Iraqis will be the security force for Iraq in its coming period of prosperity and reconstruction, said Yeheya.

"I hope to (conduct) more joint missions – side-by-side – between the IA and the (CLC)," he said.
