SAGAMI DEPOT, Japan – Soldiers of the 35th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion conducted sling load training here April 24 while Japan Ground Self-Defense Force members observed the operation.
The Soldiers practiced four delivery and four removal operations of a container with U.S. Army Aviation Battalion Japan crewmembers in their UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter based at Camp Zama.
This was the first time the 35th CSSB has conducted a sling load operation in six years which provided invaluable training to its new members and increased proficiency with those who have worked this operation before during their careers.
Member of the JGSDF from the Central Readiness Force at Camp Zama and Middle Army members from Camp Asaka were able to view the Army airborne operations.
First Lt. Randolph Capocasale, a plans officer with the 35th CSSB was in charge of the sling load operations.
“Demonstrating the capabilities of a sling load and that it can be done safely and effectively builds trust,” he said.
The U.S. Army could easily be called on to conduct an operation with our bilateral JGSDF partners requiring sling loads such as in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
